Morwenna Carne (formerly Whitworth, née Chynoweth) was the governess of Geoffrey Charles Poldark who moved to Trenwith in 1794.

Move to Cornwall

In 1794, Morwenna was asked to teach Geoffrey Charles Poldark by her cousin, Elizabeth Warleggan. Morwenna accepted and moved to Trenwith.

Morwenna moved to Trenwith and met Demelza Poldark's brother Drake Carne. They fell in love instantly and met up in secret while Morwenna was looking after Geoffrey Charles Poldark.

When George Warleggan found out that she and Geoffrey Charles went to Clowance Poldark's christening, he decided to secure her hand in marriage to Mr. Whitworth.

Morwenna was unhappy with the match, because she did not love her potential suitor. She met with Drake, and they kissed but she failed to tell him that George had planned for her to marry another man.

Geoffrey Charles and Morwenna had been entertained by watching the toads that Drake Carne had put in George Warleggan's pond annoy him. To Drakes surprise, Ross Poldark had already played a similar on him at school, as George would not accept that his grandfather was a blacksmith and wanted nothing to do with the man, which Ross and Francis Poldark found absurd. As a consequence, George and Elizabeth find out Drake put the toads in the pond and that he and Morwenna are in love.

Just when Morwenna thinks she can marry Drake, George has Drake charged with 'stealing' a Bible which Geoffrey Charles had given to him. Morwenna is forced to marry Mr. Whitworth, as George threatens her that Drake will hang if she does not. Drake, Demelza Poldark and Ross Poldark discover this and run to the church to attempt to stop the marriage, but they are too late.

Morwenna is forced into an abusive marriage with Osbourne Whitworth. Osborne is a horrible man and Morwenna tells Demelza Poldark that he is a monster. She becomes pregnant Whitworth's child but Osbourne continues to sexually abuse her until she is extremely ill. Dwight Enys comes to check on Morwenna and confirms that she is ill and that Osbourne needs to leave her be, but he will not.

Morwenna's sister Rowella Chynoweth arrives to help Morwenna with her step-daughters. Osbourne and Rowella sleep together while Morwenna is ill. While Morwenna is in labour, Osbourne hopes that she will die. On the news of his son's birth, he assumes her to be dead and is unhappy to hear that she is alive.

Osborne continues to sleep with Rowella and she becomes pregnant. Rowella asks to marry her suitor, a librarian, in order to hide the fact that the child is Whitworth's. They attmept to blackmail him for £1000, but eventually agree on £500.

Morwenna overhears the arrangement and confronts Osbourne. He wants to resume marital relations and continue sexually assulting Morwenna. Morwenna threatens to kill her son, John, by smothering him if Osbourne will not leave her alone. Osbourne leaves in a panic. Morwenna then reveals that she would never hurt John and was doing it to protect herself.

Drake Carne later leaves Morwenna a bunch of flowers at her door. She assumes they are from him and knows he was nearby. She tells him she loves him before going back inside.
