The Revolutionary War, also known as the War of Independence, began when thirteen of the North American states declared independence from Great Britain's rule. It lasted from 1775 to 1783.

In 1780, Ross Poldark joined the British Army to escape imprisonment for brawling. Even though he believed their part in it was wrong, he fought for them in the Revolutionary War.

At some point, he was playing cards with some friends when they were attacked. Ross was knocked out and received medical care from Dwight Enys, who patched him up. He was left with a scar on his cheek. In 1783, he returned home to Cornwall, where he faced people wondering what went wrong, since it ended in victory for the Americans.[1]
