"My boy must not be fussed over? On the contrary, he must be cherished, exalted!"
—George to Elizabeth about Valentine

Valentine Warleggan was the younger son of Elizabeth Warleggan. The true parentage of Valentine was unknown, but it was likely Ross Poldark, rather than George Warleggan, who was led to believe he was Valentine's father.

Biography

Valentine was born at Trenwith in 1794.

His mother slept with her former fiancé, Ross Poldark, a few weeks before her marriage to George Warleggan. He was born eight months later when Elizabeth staged a fall. She was worried that should Valentine be born before her claimed due date, George would know the truth.

The only people who knew Valentine may not be George's son were Elizabeth, Agatha, Ross and Demelza Poldark.

Despite this, George loved Valentine and was very proud to have a son. He thought there was a resemblance and wanted him to be cherished. However, Elizabeth and Agatha noted the resemblance Valentine had for Ross, and even his brother, Geoffrey Charles, pointed out Valentine looked very unlike George.

Although Elizabeth cared for Valentine in a way, she was quite cold and distant toward him, unlike she was with her elder child at his age. Valentine lived at Warleggan House with his family. Agatha Poldark would later get into an argument with George, where she revealed that Ross was his true father. George was very upset, and began to change the way he acted toward at Valentine.
